Welcome to the Josiah Royce Edition website.
On this site you will find postings of Royce’s books, philosophical articles, other writings, and much material relevant to Royce’s works. A major contribution of the edition is the transcription of unpublished materials–his dissertation and many of his lectures. The website also contains the Frank Oppenheim Comprehensive Index of Royce’s papers at the Harvard University Archives, extensive bibliographies, some autobiographical material, plus the bylaws and edition board membership.
One item of great significance is that the Basic Writings of Royce, two volumes, edited by John McDermott, is available as the first posting under the Other Writings section. This searchable pdf version of the two volumes are now open access through a grant received by Fordham University. The best way of searching these volumes is to download the two volumes and the use the crtl-f function.
If the Search function, on the left border, is used, it is best to clear your data history. The Search function will check your cookies and data history prior to checking the website itself.
When you wish to leave a page, use the back function or click on another screen category listed on the left.
Most of the links on these pages are pdf files. If your browser is set to open pdfs as pdfs automatically, the file will appear immediately; otherwise you will be asked whether you wish to open the pdf file with whatever reader you have on your computer. Should you need a pdf reader, you may obtain an Adobe Reader here.
We will update sections and pages as new material is added
